Matching Gift Opportunities
Qualified Charitable Distribution
You can transfer funds from your IRA directly to Episcopal Community Services. This is an effective way to have an immediate impact while ensuring our work of guiding Philadelphians out of a cycle of poverty and toward economic mobility. Here’s how it works:
- You must be 70 ½ or older.
- An individual may transfer up to a total of $108,000 per year and a married couple may give up to $216,000 to all organizations.
- Your gift must be transferred directly from the IRA account to Episcopal Community Services.
- Your gift is a transfer of funds from your IRA to Episcopal Community Services so it does not count as income for the year.
- If you are 73 and older, the transfer of funds counts towards your annual Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA.
- An individual may take a one-time QCD up to $54,000 to fund a charitable gift annuity (CGA) or charitable remainder trust (CRT).
You can download a sample letter for your IRA administrator here to start the distribution process. You may also be able to request a qualified charitable distribution through your online account portal.
Please note: If you are still working and contributing to a retirement account, this gift could impact your taxable income. Please consult a qualified advisor before making a gift.
EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit)
Individuals and businesses can redirect their Pennsylvania tax liability to support ECS’ Out of School Time (OST) after school and summer camp programs! Giving through EITC- EIO tax credits is an easy – and incredibly powerful – way to support students and their families in underfunded public schools.
Whether you are an individual or a business without tax credits, or a business with existing tax credits, simply contact Carol Neilson (caroln@ecsphilly.org or 215-351-1461) to discuss your donation.
Why Support ECS OST?
Each year, ECS’ Out of School Time (OST) provides more than 750 students with educational enrichment in a safe, constructive environment when school is out and caregivers are still at work. ECS runs one of the largest OST programs in the region, currently active in seven schools.
School ends at 3:30, but the workday doesn’t end there. At OST, students eat a wholesome snack, complete their homework, practice social and emotional skill building, complete STEAM curriculum-based projects, interact with outside consultants like Walnut Street Theatre and a martial arts academy, learn to build and operate robots, and prepare skits and programs to share with their families.
The impact of OST programs isn’t just anecdotal! A recent report called the Return on Investment of Afterschool Programs in Pennsylvania concluded that, for every dollar invested in an afterschool program in the commonwealth, $6.69 is returned in averted costs associated with reducing high school dropouts, teen pregnancy, substance abuse disorder, crime and delinquency.
